Abstract: Obituary of former director of Scott Polar Research Institute, who developed airborne radio echo-sounding system to measure depth of ice sheets, replacing former seismic techniques. Took post with Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey as base commander at Signy Island in 1946, and returned with Norwegian-British-Swedish Expedition in 1949. Presented idea of satellite altimetry to map Antarctic ice sheet in 1965. Served as President of Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research from 1970-74.
