Abstract: | Studies socio-economic development in two northern peripheral regions, Murmanskaya Oblast' and Magadanskaya Oblast', with view to finding main tools required for successful adaptation of regions of Russian North to post-Soviet era. Explores process from point of view of local inhabitants, workers, enterprises and public sector. Examines fishing, mining, in particular, gold and nickel production. Contrasts success of internationalising and restructuring of Noril'sk Nikel' in Murmansk with decline in Magadan. |
