Abstract: Describes 1943-45 expedition launched to safeguard Falkland Islands and deny harbours in sub-Antarctic territories to German raiders and U-boats during Second World War. Aim was also to reassert British sovereignty in face of incursions by neutral Argentina. Bases established at Port Lockroy, Deception Island and Hope Bay laid foundations for British Antarctic Survey. Based on contemporary sources including official reports and diaries and letters of participants.
