| Abstract: | Interview with Bernese geologist who proposes that in past 12,000 years, since end of last Ice Age, there have been twelve periods when alpine glaciers were smaller than today. Theory is based on carbon dating, dendrochronology, and palaeoentomology of tree trunks and peat remnants emerging from glaciers which indicate that all samples grew in certain temporal windows. Includes text insert on author's first publication on this subject in 2004; also text insert on history of Swiss Foundation for Alpine Research. |
