Abstract: Presents process-oriented approach to simulation of glacier mass balance using downscaled GCM integrations. Simulates mass balances of Nigardsbreen (Norway) and Rhonegletscher (Switzerland) using glacier-specific seasonal sensitivities based on intermediate complexity mass balance model. Simulations using reanalyses (ECMWF) for period 1979-93 agree well with in situ mass balance measurements for Nigardsbreen. Multicentury integrations of coupled (ECHAM4/OPYC) and mixed-layer (ECHAM4/MLO) GCMs excluding external forcing show high correlation between mass balance and decadal variations of North Atlantic Oscillation. High NAO phase means enhanced/reduced winter precipitation for Nigardsbreen/Rhonegletscher. Argues that internal climate system variations can therefore explain strong positive mass balances for maritime Norwegian glaciers for 1980-95, and be partly responsible for recent negative balances in Alps.
