What influence do the old Sámi Noaidi drums from Lapland play in the construction of new shaman drums by Sámi persons today? / Francis Joy.

Title: What influence do the old Sámi Noaidi drums from Lapland play in the construction of new shaman drums by Sámi persons today? / Francis Joy.
Author(s): Joy, Francis.
Date: [2014]
Publisher: [Tartu]: [Estonian Literary Museum]
Abstract: Describes role of Noaidi, religious specialists in Saami society, as healers, diviners and ritual masters. One important instrument associated with work of Noaidi is magical drum (goavddis) which was richly decorated with symbols and structures depicting indigenous world-view and cosmic order. Art of Noaidi has been major inspiration for preservation of Saami culture and heritage, to such extent that new types of decorative "shaman" drums are emerging in Finnish and Norwegian Lapland.
