Ice depth sounding with electromagnetic waves, Arctic and Antarctic / Amory H. Waite, R.F. Johnson, E. Hryckowian.
Title: | Ice depth sounding with electromagnetic waves, Arctic and Antarctic / Amory H. Waite, R.F. Johnson, E. Hryckowian. |
Author(s): | Waite, Amory H. Johnson, R. F. Hryckowian, E. |
Date: | [1964] |
Publisher: | [n.p] : |
Abstract: | Notes need for knowledge of dielectric properties of ice related to thickness, etc., for safe operation of aircraft using electronic altimeters in polar regions. Reports investigations with radio frequencies from 30 to 4000 MHz propagated from surface and airborne vehicles. Investigates gradients of dielectric constant and loss factor, and rapid and precise measurements of ice depths up to 500 metres. Soundings taken along more than 1600 km distinguished between land and waterborne ice and detected glacier bottoms, shelf boundaries, two hitherto unknown sub-ice ridges, and an island 6 km wide. |
Notes: | Commentary to slide-lecture presented at 15th Alaskan Science Conference. |
