"Encased in ice": Antarctic heroism in Beryl Bainbridge's The birthday boys / Elisabeth Wennö.

Title: "Encased in ice": Antarctic heroism in Beryl Bainbridge's The birthday boys / Elisabeth Wennö.
Author(s): Wennö, Elisabeth.
Date: 2009.
Publisher: Umeå, Sweden: Umeå University and Royal Skyttean Society
In: Cold matters : cultural perceptions of snow, ice and cold. (2009.),
Abstract: Examines representation of Antarctic heroism in Bainbridge's fictional portrayal of Scott's 1910-13 Terra Nova expedition, with particular reference to turn-of-the century heroic ideology. Discusses in relation to cultural call to national duty at time of change and threat of war, and as misguided and fatal notion on both cultural and personal level. Analyses ways in which metaphors of ice and its cognates are used to underline novel's tragic theme of male subservience to patriarchal ideology.
