Title: An ice excavation machine / K.D. Vaudrey.
Author(s): Vaudrey, K. D.
Date: 1977.
Publisher: Port Hueneme, CA: Civil Engineering Laboratory, Naval Construction Battalion Center
Abstract: Reviews operational requirements for ice excavation to facilitate polar construction, and selects 30-hp ladder-type trencher based on low ground pressure and versatility. Describes modifications, laboratory tests and field evaluation. Also describes tests in Antarctica of similar, but larger machine during ice-trenching operation. Notes effectiveness of CEL-designed conical teeth, and of backoe attachements for special applications such as ice hummock removal and deadman anchor emplacement.
