Towards a multiangled study of reindeer agency, overlapping environmental environments, and human-animal relationships / Jukka Nyyssönen, Anna-Kaisa Salmi.

Title: Towards a multiangled study of reindeer agency, overlapping environmental environments, and human-animal relationships / Jukka Nyyssönen, Anna-Kaisa Salmi.
Author(s): Nyyssönen, Jukka.
Salmi, Anna-Kaisa.
Date: 2013.
In: Arctic Anthropology. (2013.), Vol. 50(2) (2013)
Abstract: Investigates applicability of theories of animal agency to studies of human-animal relationships. Compares, from semiotic and ontological perspectives, interpretation placed by wolves (Canis lupus) on their environment with relationship between domesticated reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) and Saami. Indigenous Saami religious practices expressed interconnectedness of daily life, nature and supernatural by ritual animal sacrifice. Offering sites (siedi) excavated in Finnish Lapland show that reindeer offerings began in 12th century AD, peaking in 15th and 16th centuries as reindeer pastoralism grew in importance. Methods of reindeer sacrificial offering remain under investigation.
