Precautionary spatial protection to facilitate the scientific study of habitats and communities under ice shelves in the context of recent, rapid, regional climate change / P.N. Trathan, and 3 others.
Title: | Precautionary spatial protection to facilitate the scientific study of habitats and communities under ice shelves in the context of recent, rapid, regional climate change / P.N. Trathan, and 3 others. |
Author(s): | Trathan, P. N. |
Date: | 2013. |
In: | CCAMLR Science. (2013.), Vol. 20 (2013) |
Abstract: | Proposes that commercial fishing activities should be prohibited in habitats revealed by collapsing ice shelves in Antarctic in view of scientific opportunities presented by loss of existing habitats and creation of new ones. Also suggests areas under existing ice shelves in Subareas 88.3, 48.1 and 48.5 should be preserved and protected for scientific study, even if ice shelves recede or collapse in future because of climate change. |
