Title: Rallying around a flag? On the persistent gap in scientific internationalism between word and deed / Aant Elzinga.
Author(s): Elzinga, Aant.
Date: 2013.
Publisher: London: Routledge
In: Emerging politics of Antarctica. (2013.),
Abstract: Discusses discrepancy between ideal of scientific internationalism and entrenched and costly national interests. Examines waves of change in framework of Antarctic research: first, following Second World War, shaped by conditions of Cold War; second in 1980s influenced by postcolonial developments and increased environmentalism; third, formation of multinational consortia, driven by economic globalisation and new partnerships. Recounts creation of Special (later Scientific) Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR); examines Swedish exclusion from Antarctic Treaty, and considers possibility of sharing of stations in Antarctica.
