Abstract: Argues that among Buryat Mongols in Cisbaikalia (Pri'baykal'ye) there exists alternative sense of belonging to land effected through ritual practices, in contrast to Soviet policy-makers' designated autonomous national territory. Describes these pastoral routes, sacred places, ancestral sites collectively as "shamanist topography". Highlights recent moves to protect integrity of this topography.
