Abstract: Discusses reasons why 1910-12 Japanese Antarctic Expedition and its leader Shirase were overlooked internationally until expedition's centenary. These include linguistic barriers, association with opportunistic Count Okuma, national prejudice, and coincidence of return with death of Emperor Meiji. Includes translation of "The song of the Antarctic Expedition Team".
