Abstract: Discusses evolution of Shackleton's status in Ireland from relative obscurity, because of his Anglo-Irish origins and hostility in Ireland to British Imperial endeavours, to enhanced standing in late twentieth century. Compares this to Tom Crean, who avoided publicity for his Antarctic journeys for similar political reasons despite his Irish origins, but has also since been fêted.
