Record #207236:

Through Lapland the winter of 1820: Sir Arthur de Capell Brooke's journey from Alten to Torneå / Lennart Pettersson.

Title: Through Lapland the winter of 1820: Sir Arthur de Capell Brooke's journey from Alten to Torneå / Lennart Pettersson.
Author(s): Pettersson, Lennart.
Date: 2009.
Publisher: Umeå, Sweden: Umeå University and Royal Skyttean Society
In: Cold matters : cultural perceptions of snow, ice and cold. (2009.),
Abstract: Discusses Sir Arthur de Capell Brooke's 1820 expedition to Lapland, comparing his subsequent written travel account, Winter in Lapland and Sweden ... (1826) with its accompanying volume of paintings. In both books, Capell Brooke features ice, snow and cold chiefly as exotic dangers rather than objects of threat. Readers' opinions (e.g. of ethnic groups) were affected according to whether books were read separately or together, as written volume presents more realistic portrait than that suggested by paintings.
