Investigates changing perceptions of extreme environment, specifically of Prince Edward Island, and how this can add to understanding of environmental history and show how values projected onto and invested in environment as "nature" changed over time. Describes how underlying patterns in fabric of South African society, including race and gender, crystallised on Antarctic continent.
