Discusses widespread network of co-operatives throughout Siberia and in particular, all-Siberian co-operative union, Zakupsbyt. Describes unique character of Siberian co-operatives, which thrived because of abundant natural resources, absence of shopkeepers, growing economy and robust peasantry. Notes role of political exiles, notably Decembrists, in providing leadership in co-operative movement as early as 1831. Highlights railway system as another stimulus to co-operative movement. |
