| Abstract: | Surveys Western authors' assessmentof role of Russian state in development of Siberia. Authors cited include Bancroft, Golder, Kerner, Salisbury, Gibson and Kappeler. Suggests that Westerners in general focus on fur trade as main stimulus for Russia's expansion and colonisation in early years. Describes first Western attempts at analysis in second half of 19th century using not only accounts from travellers and explorers but also of work of Russian historians. Considers that Western authors' studies suffered from lack of access to Russian archives. |
