Abstract: Based on fieldwork in 2006 with Kurumkan Evenki family in Buryatiya. Discusses different forms of communication between humans and non-humans in various contexts of social organisation. Uses example of communication between hunters and their dogs, and illustrates with three stories. Compares and contrasts concept of keeping secrets in Evenk and Buryat cultures. Notes interconnectedness of totemism and animism in context of cultural contact.
