Abstract: Examines traditional land-use and subsistence practices of hunting, fishing and gathering of Udege forest people living near Bikin river in Primorskiy Kray. Explores role of local spirituality, especially rituals and performances associated with concept of masterhood and hunting luck. Reviews massive changes witnessed by Udege during Soviet period. Examines how tradition of venerating sacred places has persisted and is currently spreading beyond Udege to include others engaged with forest hunting. Notes disappearance of much Udege culture but formation of new forms of expression of Udege beliefs.
