Record #206510:

Shamanistic revival in a post-socialist landscape: luck and ritual among Zabaikal'ye Orochen-Evenkis / David G. Anderson.

Title: Shamanistic revival in a post-socialist landscape: luck and ritual among Zabaikal'ye Orochen-Evenkis / David G. Anderson.
Author(s): Anderson, David G.
Date: 2012.
Publisher: Walnut Creek, CA: Left Coast Press
In: Landscape and culture in Northern Eurasia. (2012.),
Abstract: Based on author's ethnographic visits in 1989 and 2004. Examines how everyday practice of Orochen-Evenki is important to understand how they are adapting to tumultuous new political-economic circumstances. Argues that contemporary ritual expressions of 'luck' and reciprocity provide frame through which post-Socialist environment and market conditions can be understood. Contemporary rituals include gifting, feasting, offerings, reindeer sacrifice, mortuary structures and carved idols.
