| Abstract: | Describes diving behaviour of 23 beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) of eastern Chukchi Sea stock, tagged with satellite-linked time and depth recorders at Point Lay, Alaska, between 1998 and 2008 Identifies three basic dive types: "shallow", "intermediate" and "deep". Suggests that distinct types of diving behaviour may relate to availability of particular prey species in specific ocean currents. |
