Speaking of whales: from totemizing the humpback to demonizing the Japanese / Adrian Peace.

Title: Speaking of whales: from totemizing the humpback to demonizing the Japanese / Adrian Peace.
Author(s): Peace, Adrian.
Date: 2010.
Publisher: Sandefjord: Kommandør Chr. Christensens Hvalfangstmuseum
In: Whaling and history III : papers presented at a symposium in Sandefjord on the 18th and 19th June 2009. (2010.),
Abstract: Describes events surrounding 1982 decision by newly-elected Australian Labour government to send customs ship Ocean Viking to Antarctic waters to police activities of Japanese whaler Nisshin-maru in areas claimed as Australian exclusive economic zone. Discusses change in policy from voicing opposition to direct action in relation to totemizing of whales in late 20th century Australia. Whales have become endowed with range of attributes and qualities which have ultimately made their protection significant source of national political pride and international moral standing.
