Abstract: Discusses Amundsen's exploration achievements and endeavours in relation to major advances in scientific instrumentation and professionalisation of scientific research. Demonstrates how several of Amundsen's expeditions resonated strongly with contemporary trends and interests in scientific societies, especially in Norway. Illustrates extent to which Amundsen was torn between loyalty to Fridtjof Nansen and his scientific approach to exploration and quest for recognition and media visibility as dashing explorer.
