| Abstract: | Describes particle physics detector IceCube Neutrino Observatory and its prototype, AMANDA, built in South Pole ice using hot-water drills to bore over 100 holes to maximum depth of 2,500 m. Reports on high-resolution particulate profiles made with laser dust logger in eight boreholes during detector commissioning from 2004-10, permitting detailed reconstruction of palaeoclimate records. Uses manual and algorithmic matching to synthesise South Pole measurements with ice-core and logging data from Dome C, East Antarctica, and identify volcanic ash depositions, to permit bracketing of Toba (Sumatra) supereruption. |
