Record #205707:

Women's and girls' participation in Dene games in the Northwest Territories / Audrey R. Giles.

Title: Women's and girls' participation in Dene games in the Northwest Territories / Audrey R. Giles.
Author(s): Giles, Audrey R.
Date: 2013.
Publisher: Vancouver: University of British Columbia Press
In: Aboriginal peoples and sport in Canada : historical foundations and contemporary issues. (2013.),
Abstract: Study of traditional beliefs concerning menstruation that shape attitudes towards role of women in Dene games. In addition to regional competitions, Dene games are played at circumpolar Arctic Winter Games (AWG) but by men only. Proposed female participation was strongly resisted by all-male Denendeh Traditional Games Association (DTGA) in 2000, on grounds of tradition and female physiology. Examines problems faced by AWG policy makers in resolving difficulties posed by clash between Western liberalism and traditional cultures.
