Abstract: Proposes theoretical model using particle- and tracer-based estimates of lateral diffusivities to estimate suppression of eddy mixing across currents. Uses velocity field derived from sea surface height measurements in Southern Ocean region west of Drake Passage. Compares tracer-derived diffusivities to theoretical model. Discusses how to compute lateral and vertical variations in eddy diffusivities using floats and drifters in real ocean.
