Record #205607:

Standing eddies in the meridional overturning circulation / Jan Viebahn, Carsten Eden.

Title: Standing eddies in the meridional overturning circulation / Jan Viebahn, Carsten Eden.
Author(s): Viebahn, Jan.
Eden, Carsten.
Date: 2012.
In: Journal of Physical Oceanography. (2012.), Vol. 42(9) (2012)
Abstract: Examines role of standing eddies in meridional overturning circulation of Southern Ocean, by decomposing time-mean isopycnal meridional streamfunction into time- and zonal-mean part, standing-eddy part, and transient-eddy part. Neutralises effect of standing eddies (permanent meanders) of Antarctic Circumpolar Current by zonal integration along depth dependent horizontal isolines of time-mean density. Demonstrates using Southern Ocean model that neglecting depth dependence of zonal integration paths may represent acceptable approximation.
