Record #205499:
Fort Conger: a site of Arctic history in the 21st century / Margaret M. Bertulli, and 3 others.
Title: | Fort Conger: a site of Arctic history in the 21st century / Margaret M. Bertulli, and 3 others. |
Author(s): | Bertulli, Margaret M. |
Date: | 2013. |
In: | Arctic. (2013.), Vol. 66(3) (2013) |
Abstract: | Discusses role of Fort Conger, northern Ellesmere Island, in several High Arctic expeditions between 1875 and 1935. Investigates remains of historic voyages of exploration and discovery related to 19th century expeditions of Nares and Greely, early 20th century expeditions of Peary and forays by traders and government personnel. Complex of shelters at Fort Conger symbolises evolution from rigid application of Western knowledge (as represented in unsuitable prefabricated Greely expedition house designed in US) to pragmatic adaptation of aboriginal knowledge represented in Inughuit-influenced shelters extant today. |
