Changing role of Sámi women in reindeer herding communities: northern Norway and the 1970-1980s women's resistance and redefinition movement / Marcie Bremmer.

Title: Changing role of Sámi women in reindeer herding communities: northern Norway and the 1970-1980s women's resistance and redefinition movement / Marcie Bremmer.
Author(s): Bremmer, Marcie.
Date: 2012.
Publisher: Saarbrücken: LAP Lambert
Abstract: Following final definition of nation state borders in 1826 and 1834, Norway enforced strict assimilation policy against indigenous Saami population's identity as separate people. Saami women in particular found their social, economic and political autonomy eroded. Between 1945 and 1960 various movements for Saami rights began which, however, continued to diminish role of women in traditional reindeer herding and other activities. In 1970s and 1980s, Saami women began forming organisations to address social and political issues affecting their place in society.
