The Soviet Arctic / Vladimir Zenzinov.
Title: | The Soviet Arctic / Vladimir Zenzinov. |
Author(s): | Zenzinov, Vladimir. |
Date: | 1944. |
Publisher: | [Hoboken, NJ]: [Wiley-Blackwell] |
Abstract: | Summarises history of exploration and development of Soviet Arctic from 1648 to 1944, including discovery of Bering Strait. Author emphasises that in twentieth century political exiles like himself made considerable contributions to knowledge of Siberia. Points out difficulty in distinguishing between information and propaganda, but despite this, concludes that substantial development occurred in road and rail building, development of towns, and establishment of industries in Soviet Arctic. Attributes startling rapidity of change in Kolyma region to discovery of rich gold deposits, and efforts of deported kulaks. Expresses view that Arctic still offers great scope for development. |
