Can Drake Passage observations match Ekman's classic theory? / Jeff A. Polton, and 4 others.
Title: | Can Drake Passage observations match Ekman's classic theory? / Jeff A. Polton, and 4 others. |
Author(s): | Polton, Jeff A. |
Date: | 2013. |
In: | Journal of Physical Oceanography. (2013.), Vol. 43(8) (2013) |
Abstract: | Presents method for estimating ageostrophic currents from shipboard acoustic Doppler current profiler data in Drake Passage, and finds that observations are consistent with Ekman's theory of steady spiraling velocity profiles in boundary layers. Eddy viscosity value most frequently reconciling observations with classic theory is 0.094 m²s⁻¹, corresponding to Ekman depth scale of 39 m. |
