| Abstract: | Implements automated landcover classification algorithm to examine dynamics of thermokarst lake surface area over different spatial and temporal scales in Tukoyaktuk Peninsula, NWT, Canada, located within zone of continuous permafrost. Based on Landsat imagery from 1998-2011, finds no significant overall growth over this period, but identifies initial overall growth during 1985-97 and subsequent decline during 1998-2011. Large lakes saw greatest changes. Suggests that post-1998 declines in lake area resulted from strong summer Beaufort Sea High. Discusses regional differences between north and south of peninsula, spatial heterogeneity within regions, influences of permafrost and surficial geology, etc., and speculates on effect of continued Arctic warming. |
