| Abstract: | Preliminary study on influence of climate change on polar bear (Ursus maritimus Phipps) population and habitat on west and north coast of Alaska. Study relates observations of polar bear occurrences and patterns of movement to changing climatic conditions affecting various types of sea ice. Effects of human activity, particularly oil exploration, is of immediate concern, and consideration should be given to restricting such exploration in known polar bear and seal (Phoca hispida) denning areas. |
