| Abstract: | Describes integration of St Anne into Mamit Inuit cosmology following mass conversion to Catholicism at end of nineteenth century. Belief in St Anne has replaced reliance on old spirits such as fox-woman Memekueshu. Following government appropriation of traditional territories, increasingly sedentary and settled lifestyle has caused serious social problems among Mamit Inuit, and St Anne's manitushiun (use of mental and spiritual power) is regarded as powerful mediator in resolution of these concerns. |
