Record #204524:

Investigating the potential use of aerial line transect surveys for estimating polar bear abundance in sea ice habitats: a case study for the Chukchi Sea / Ryan M. Nielson, Thomas J. Evans, Michelle Bourassa Stahl.

Title: Investigating the potential use of aerial line transect surveys for estimating polar bear abundance in sea ice habitats: a case study for the Chukchi Sea / Ryan M. Nielson, Thomas J. Evans, Michelle Bourassa Stahl.
Author(s): Nielson, Ryan M.
Evans, Thomas J.
Stahl, Michelle Bourassa.
Date: 2012.
Publisher: Society for Marine Mammalogy
Abstract: Reports use of simulations to investigate accuracy and precision of distance sampling (DS) survey methods for estimating polar bear (Ursus maritimus) abundance in sea ice habitats, using Chukchi Sea sub-population as example. Simulations indicate that DS could be successfully employed to estimate polar bear abundance on sea ice, and that survey costs would be lower for DS than for capture-recapture surveys.
