Record #204012:

Indigenous agency in the missionary encounter: the example of the Khanty and the Nenets / Eva Toulouze.

Title: Indigenous agency in the missionary encounter: the example of the Khanty and the Nenets / Eva Toulouze.
Author(s): Toulouze, Eva.
Date: 2011.
In: Journal of Ethnology and Folkloristics. (2011.), Vol. 5(1) (2011)
Abstract: Traditional research on missionary encounters in Russia in Soviet era presented indigenous peoples as passive recipients of Christianity rather than active participants in conversion procedure. This view is shown to be erroneous and maintains that Khanty and Nenets carefully considered advantages and disadvantages of conversion and that, by accepting or rejecting Christianity, followed their own interests without submitting to either government or missionary pressure.
