Record #203817:

On top of the world: Ernest S. Burch Jr's contribution to the 1983 National Geographical Society Peoples of the Arctic map / Robert P. Wheelersburg.

Title: On top of the world: Ernest S. Burch Jr's contribution to the 1983 National Geographical Society Peoples of the Arctic map / Robert P. Wheelersburg.
Author(s): Wheelersburg, Robert P.
Date: 2012.
In: Arctic Anthropology. (2012.), Vol. 49(2) (2012)
Abstract: Assesses accuracy of Ernest S. Burch's contribution to Saami portion of National Geographical Society's Peoples of the Arctic ca 1825 map. Notes that Saami portion of map was based primarily on secondary English sources, resulting in place names that used mixture of languages. Argues, however, that Burch's reconstruction of traditional resource territories in North Cape region accurately reflected complexity of situation during early 19th century before borders became fixed and states exercised sovereignty over region.
