Record #203708:

Russia / Olga Murashko.

Title: Russia / Olga Murashko.
Author(s): Murashko, Olga.
Date: 2010.
In: Indigenous World. (2010.), (2010)
Abstract: Overview of decline in legal and socio-economic situation of Russian indigenous peoples between 2009-2010. Increasing problems of access to traditional fishing and hunting grounds were exacerbated by ill-judged decisions made by central government and by aggressive commercial interests. RAIPON (Russian Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North) and IWGIA (International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs) continue to represent indigenous minority interests both within Russian political and legal systems and at United Nations. Deterioration continues however, particularly in isolated communities of Evenkiya, Taimyr and Koryakia and on Yamal Peninsula. Residents in these regions are threatened by closures of essential infrastructure and planned construction of one of world's largest hydroelectric dams.
