Abstract: | Discussion of distance, movement and civilisation in Siberia, focusing on different views of space and time held by incoming traders, whose economic activity is vital to region, and indigenous population or Sibiriak. Common to both groups are difficulties caused by inhospitable climate, geographical distances involved and general lack of civilisation and progress. Similarities are noted between life of traders in present-day Siberia and nineteenth-century frontier life in American West. |
