Author(s): Lüdecke, Cornelia.
Date: 2012.
Publisher: München: Instituts für Geodäsie, Universität der Bundeswehr München

Abstract: While his rigid airships were still in process of development Graf Ferdinand von Zeppelin (1838-1917) explored possibility of using them as scientific and geographical platforms in Arctic. He led study expedition to Spitsbergen in 1910 to assess suitable sites and to investigate meteorological conditions in relation to future aerial navigation in Arctic. Following exploratory journey round west coast of Spitsbergen, Zeppelin concluded that airships needed further development in order to be used successfully in Arctic conditions. He recommended establishment of aerological station on Spitsbergen which resulted in foundation of German observatory at Advent Bay (later at Cross Bay). This observatory remained operational until 1914 and laid basis for future development of Arctic air traffic.
