Physical and sociocultural factors affecting walrus subsistence at three villages in the northern Bering sea, 1952-2004 / Martin D. Robards, Alexander S. Kitaysky, John J. Burns.
Title: | Physical and sociocultural factors affecting walrus subsistence at three villages in the northern Bering sea, 1952-2004 / Martin D. Robards, Alexander S. Kitaysky, John J. Burns. |
Author(s): | Robards, Martin D. Kitaysky, Alexander S. Burns, John J. |
Date: | 2013. |
In: | Polar Geography. (2013.), Vol. 36(1-2) (2013) |
Abstract: | Explores dynamic relationship between sea ice, walrus (Odobenus rosmarus divergens) and subsistence hunting between 1995 and 2004 at three northern Bering Sea villages (Diomede, Gambell and Savoonga). Results suggest that physical ice conditions near villages affect timing and migration of walrus herds and thus hunting, but village-specific factors, such as number and demographics of hunters, impart strong inter-community variability to magnitude of catches. |
