Spatial distribution of pico- and nano-phytoplankton and bacteria in the Chukchi Sea in relation to water masses / Fang Zhang, and 5 others.
Title: | Spatial distribution of pico- and nano-phytoplankton and bacteria in the Chukchi Sea in relation to water masses / Fang Zhang, and 5 others. |
Author(s): | Zhang, Fang. |
Date: | 2012. |
In: | Advances in Polar Science. (2012.), Vol. 23(4) (2012) |
Abstract: | Evaluates relationships between water masses and pico- and nano-phytoplankton and bacterial abundance in Chukchi Sea. Finds that melting sea ice affected physical characteristics of Chukchi Sea by reducing salinity of surface mixed layer, resulting in greater hydrodynamic stability of water column. These changes were accompanied by increased bacterial abundance. Warm Pacific water brought nutrients into Chukchi Sea, resulting in greater abundance of bacteria and nano-phytoplankton in Chukchi Sea than in other regions of Arctic Ocean. |
