Abstract: Presents political history of Labrador Inuit, as revealed through development of distinctive Inuit institutions that formed or transformed in encounters with succession of whalers, fishermen, missionaries, traders and agents of state from late 18th to mid-20th centuries. These institutions and their different spatial registers were adept at gathering and expressing Inuit resistance, and were informed by wider cultural system that stressed management of personal emotions, intellect, and avoidance of conflict.
