Record #203173:
The EU ban in the import of seal products and the WTO regulations: neglected human rights of the Arctic indigenous peoples? / Kamrul Hossain.
Title: | The EU ban in the import of seal products and the WTO regulations: neglected human rights of the Arctic indigenous peoples? / Kamrul Hossain. |
Author(s): | Hossain, Kamrul. |
Date: | 2013. |
In: | Polar Record. (2013.), Vol. 49(249) (2013) |
Abstract: | Discusses European Union's (EU) ban on import and commercialising of seals and seal products in the EU market. Ban has drawn criticism from Canada and Norway and dispute settlement procedures have been initiated within World Trade Organization. Ban has also provoked anger among Inuit and other indigenous communities, mainly from Canada and Greenland. Although EU regulation provides exception for Inuit and other indigenous hunts and subsequent commercialisation of resulting products, exception lacks clarity and proper implementation procedures. |
