Abstract: | Compares shipping conditions along Northeast, Northwest and Transpolar passages based on state-of-art analysis. Concept of sailing conditions is defined at intersection of variety of interacting and interdependent factors, including: geopolitics, military affairs, global warming, sea-ice retreat, international economic trends, resources, competing modes of transportation, environmental challenges, ocean law and regulations, logistics, jurisdictional matters, and rights of indigenous people. Also discusses transportation corridors in southern waters connecting Arctic passages to world markets (e.g. Northern Maritime Corridor, Northern Pacific Corridor, Fram Corridor and Davis Corridor) |
