Record #202941:
Bellingshausen's first accounts of his Antarctic voyage of 1819-1821 / Rip Bulkeley.
Title: | Bellingshausen's first accounts of his Antarctic voyage of 1819-1821 / Rip Bulkeley. |
Author(s): | Bulkeley, Rip. |
Date: | 2013. |
In: | Polar Record. (2013.), Vol. 49(248) (2013) |
Abstract: | Reconsiders original reports of Captain Bellingshausen, on 1819-1821 Russian Antarctic expedition, describing sighting of Antarctic ice shelf used later by the Soviet Union to claim that Russian seamen had made first discovery of mainland Antarctica. Contrasts "ice shelf" criterion with "rock and dirt" criterion and requirement to recognise, record, and announce typical of geographical discovery. Compares with possible ice shelf sighting by Cook in 1771. |
