Record #202914:

Integrated sea ice observation programs / Matthew Druckenmiller, Christian Haas.

Title: Integrated sea ice observation programs / Matthew Druckenmiller, Christian Haas.
Author(s): Druckenmiller, Matthew.
Haas, Christian.
Date: 2009.
Publisher: Fairbanks, AK: University of Alaska
In: Field techniques for sea ice research. (2009.),
Abstract: Describes and compares two integrated and interdisciplinary observation programmes: "permanent" coastal sea ice observatory along Alaska's coast at Barrow; and ISPOL, Ice Station Polarstern's drift in Southern Ocean during late 2004/early 2005. Discusses programme aims and establishment, principal components and methods (including involvement of local Iñupiat people of Barrow), and some significant outcomes. Shows how periods when observations are scientifically most important, such as spring melt and breakup, present challenges in terms of resources and logistics, safety, and sampling strategies. Includes lists of contributors and primary funding sources, and short compilations of relevant publications.
