Abstract: | Introduces biology and ecology of ice-associated marine mammals, before detailing research methods learned from Iñupiat and Inuit hunters or adapted from scientific colleagues. Includes: use of dogs to locate subnivean seal holes; live-capturing seals in their lairs, tracking local movements under ice, and long-distance movements; and collecting tissue samples for investigation of molecular markers. Also discusses permitting authorities and requirements and future research. |
